Today, there are over 89,000 branches of Alcoholics Anonymous and more than two million members in 141 countries throughout the world#Alcoholics Anonymous has a middle-aged profile - only 7% of its members world-wide are under thirty. However, drinking amongst the young is regarded as a major problem, often cited as a significant factor in violent deaths such as automobile accidents and murder#The United States banned all alcoholic drinks between 1920 and 1933. But 'Prohibition' had little impact on levels of alcoholism and merely spawned the rise of "bootleggers", gangsters who traded in illegal alcohol#In 1950, AA held its first International Convention at Cleveland, Ohio. Co-founder Dr Bob Smith - who had been the first man helped by Bill Wilson - died later that year#Poland has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in Europe at just over a gallon of pure alcohol per person per year.
